10 Midjourney Alternatives Built for Designers
Midjourney makes beautiful images you cannot edit, in a style you cannot repeat. For design work, that is the wrong shape of tool.

Sketch didn't get worse. The world moved to browser-based, cross-platform, real-time collaboration, and Sketch's macOS-native foundation — once its greatest strength — became the reason teams couldn't standardise on it.
If you're leaving, here's where people actually go.

Key takeaways

Collaborative, cloud-based design platform used to create, prototype
Figma is where the overwhelming majority of Sketch teams ended up. Browser-based so platform stops mattering, real-time multiplayer, a component and variant system that surpassed Sketch's symbols, and Dev Mode for handoff.
It also imports .sketch files, which softens the migration considerably — expect layout and symbol overrides to need cleanup, but structure generally survives.
Open-source design platform for teams building digital products at scale
Penpot is the open-source route: free with unlimited editors, self-hostable, SVG-based file formats. For teams where seat cost or data residency is the deciding factor, it's the only real answer. See Figma vs Penpot.
Best UI/UX collaboration tool that enables you to make great products
Pixso covers similar ground to Figma at a lower price, with collaboration built in.

Affinity Designer is the strongest macOS-native option — professional vector work, one-time purchase, no subscription, fully offline. It is not a UI design tool in the way Sketch was, so this is the right move for illustration, brand and print work rather than product design.

UX/UI design platform for creating wireframes, high-fidelity designs
UXPin takes a different approach: design with real code components rather than static shapes, so prototypes behave like the product.

ProtoPie is the strongest no-code tool for genuinely complex interactions — sensors, variables, conditional logic, multi-device. If your prototypes need to do real things, this outclasses everything else here.

Origami Studio is Meta's free prototyping tool, extremely powerful and with a real learning curve.

MacOS-based UI animation and interaction prototyping tool
Principle is the lightweight macOS animation and prototyping tool a lot of ex-Sketch designers still keep around.

Excalidraw for quick sketching and technical diagramming, free and open source.

Browser-based visual collaboration tool for creating wireframes
Moqups covers wireframes, diagrams and simple prototypes in the browser.
Heads up
No import is lossless. Symbols with heavy overrides, nested shared styles, and plugin-generated content are the usual casualties. Budget time to rebuild your component library properly rather than importing it and living with the damage.
The pragmatic approach most teams take: import old files for reference, but rebuild the design system from scratch in the new tool. It costs a week and produces something you'll actually maintain, rather than a library nobody trusts.
And the honest option: if you're a solo designer on a Mac who doesn't need real-time collaboration, Sketch still works fine. Migration has a cost and "everyone else moved" isn't on its own a reason to pay it.

Figma for most teams — browser-based, cross-platform, with real-time collaboration and a Sketch file import. Penpot if you want open source and unlimited free editors. Affinity Designer if you want to stay native and offline.
