Midjourney produces the best-looking raw images in the category. It's also the worst fit for actual design work, for three specific reasons: you can't reliably repeat a style across a set, you get raster output when you need vector, and precise direction is nearly impossible.
For mood boards, it's excellent. For producing assets, these ten are built closer to the job.

Key takeaways

Recraft is the one to try first. It generates genuine vector output — actual SVG you can open and edit — maintains a consistent style across a whole set, and handles text far better than the general models.
Style consistency is the feature that matters most and gets discussed least. Generating one nice illustration is easy. Generating twenty that look like they belong to the same brand is the actual job, and Recraft is built around it.

Ideogram remains the leader for legible text inside images. If you're producing posters, social graphics, or anything where the copy is part of the artwork, this is the practical choice.

AI-powered creative suite that allows users to generate, edit, enhance
Krea offers real-time canvas feedback — you sketch and adjust and the image responds as you work. That's iteration rather than repeated guessing, which is much closer to how designers actually work.

Playground combines generation with a real editing canvas, so you can compose and refine rather than regenerate and hope.

Interactive web-based sandbox by Black Forest Labs
FLUX Playground from Black Forest Labs is a web sandbox for the FLUX models, which produce excellent quality with better prompt adherence than Midjourney. Strong for photographic and illustrative work.

Generative AI platform that creates high-quality images, illustrations
Leonardo AI offers fine-grained control, custom model training and a generous free tier — the most configurable of the general tools.

AI-powered creative platform focused on generating and editing videos
Runway ML for video generation and editing.

Descript for product demo videos, where editing video by editing a transcript is genuinely faster.

Jitter for browser-based motion design.
Heads up
Check the commercial licence for anything you ship. Terms vary substantially between these tools, and free tiers often restrict commercial use.
Style consistency is the real problem. Any of these can produce one good image. Producing a coherent set that looks like one brand is where most of them fail, and where Recraft is meaningfully ahead.
Vector matters more than resolution. A raster illustration at 4K still can't be recoloured to match a rebrand. Vector output is the difference between an asset and a picture.
Generated imagery mixes badly with photography. Unless you apply a unifying treatment, the seam is obvious.
Nothing here replaces an illustrator for work that carries brand identity. It replaces stock illustration, which is a different and much lower bar.

Recraft, because it produces genuine vector output and maintains a consistent style across a set. Ideogram is better when the image needs legible text, and Krea is better for iterating visually on a canvas.
